Clobetasol is way too strong to be using it in the genital area. OTC hydrocortisone cream should work. If not, ask your doctor for something mild like Desonide cream or Westcort cream. If you continue to use clobetasol, don't be surprised if you find vascular changes in that area that might not resolve easily. I think most of us have been tempted to use something strong in delicate areas. But, frankly, one only wastes the medication and potentially creates other dermal problems.

I would like to recommend you also try a Dead Sea salt bath. I have some spotting on my penis from P and between normal moisturizing cream, petroleum jelly, and soaks in Dead Sea salt baths it has kept mine in check.

I have this list..not sure if I found it on the net..or here in the forums. I use the westcort ointment (Westcort Ointment, 0.2% Hydrocortisone valerate) which they list as mid strength but my derm called it mild.

In the past I have used a soap called Psoriasil that seemed to help calm things down in the genital area. It's OTC and non-steroidal.
This is it http://www.vitacost.com/HomeHealthPs...edicalBodyWash As with all psoriasis treatments it probably won't help for everyone but it was one of the few body washes I tried that ever helped, especially with inverse genital P. |

Hello everyone,
After reading your advice regarding Elidel and Protopic as a potential cure for Penile Psoriasis, i have cunsolted my doctor and asked him for his opinion and wanted to know if there are any posible side effects. He said that both, Elidel and Protopic, are used to locally suppress an inflammatory behaviour of the skin without the known side-effects of the corticosteroids creams. the medical indication in Israel (and i don't know if that's the case in the U.S too) is for treating atopic dermatitis though they are known to be effective in cases of gentile and facial psoriasis. However, he said that recently these creams are in headlines for being suspected to increase probability of having Lymphoma due to some absorption to the blood circulation. Despite that he noted that the u.s dermatology foundation (or something like that) and the manufacturers have not found any cintific proof to belive that's the case. At the bottom line, he have asked me to think it through and decide wheather i want it or not... I hope this information helps ![]() (and I apologize for some possible spelling mistakes) David |

I have P on the head of my penis and around my anus. Daivonex (or dovonex depending on where you live) works wonders for me. Once every two weeks is usually enough. Unfortunately this ointment is being discontinued and I am looking for a replacement.

Hi njpsor,
I have the same problem areas. Fortunately it has been very mild on my penis. Just 1 or 2 spots which I have controlled with dovenex Also. The other is much worse and bleeds. My doc prescribed me Protopic .03% the last time I saw her. It seems to work but hasn't gone away yet. Usually will get a little better then return. I guess still too soon to give it an A. I haven't actually told her about this problem area. embarrassed I guess. The cream is for inside and around my ears and elbow. |

Anyhow, I don't usually post on the skin boards, but since my P has been doing some interesting things of late, this thread interested me. The one OTC that nobody has mentioned is Bag Balm, which may or may not be effective. Also, after the whole conversation re: Desitin, I'd like to share something I got from my pediatrician, which is - you can mix OTC creams/lotions. If you find 2 that work somewhat, but in different ways, it might be worth it to try combining them (we did this for diaper rashes, which I know is not the same thing - but if it's safe for a baby's genital area, it ought to be safe for an adult's!) A big thank you to everyone for being willing to share information that isn't always comfortable to talk about... I'm sure there are a bunch of "lurkers" who are learning a great deal from all of you!!

New to Psoriasis
I am new to p and I am in the stages where I am trying to find what works best for me. This may sound a little out of the ordinary but, I take a couple of benedrials and it seems to help me with the itching that comes with p among other things. I too have gone to using detergents that are free and clear. I also, try to use products that dont have any perfumes or anything else in them. My derm told me to start tanning. I jokingly told my derm do you really think I need a little sun seeing that I am african-american. Now as far as the flaking I use an over the counter gel called Dermarest. It seems to help alot and it is 3% salicylic acid gel . But, my derm gave me a 6% salicylic acid lotion with a pre-wash that comes in a container. They are boxed together and she has to prescribe them to you. As I said before I am new here and I hope to pick up good informatiom from this group.
Thanks for having me Gragon |

Newly Diagnosed...
I'm newly diagnosed with penile psoriasis. My doctor has prescribed Desonide .05% (aka: Desonate, Desown, Tridesilon)
I'd like to know if anyone has had trouble with side effects, like irritation of the skin or thinning of the skin from using Desonide. Also, I'm Bi-Polar and I'd like to know if anyone has had trouble with systemic side effects like changes in mood, sleep, or any other systemic problems whle using Desonide. Thanks and good luck to all. |

Thanks for this list!

I thought I was being given the mildest treatment out there - Desonide .05% - but according to this list, hydrocortisone would be even milder. I want to start with the mildest. Guess my doc has some explaining to do. |
