    Night Sweats?

I frequently wake up in the morning with my clothes/sheets drenched in sweat. It doesn't seem to matter whether it is warm out, cold out, AC is on, heat is on whether I wear clothes or not!

Okay now, that I scared everyone with that last comment I am posting a poll to see who else has this issue.

Now, before any of my wisecracking friends here say I have menopause, I do NOT have menopause.

    Thanks for you responses FlakeyMatt

    Hey Matt

Yeah I get them occassionally. I even went to my primary to be tested for hormone changes but everything was normal with that. Then I started to notice that when I have to increase my pain meds, the night sweats start. I'll go from freezing to sweating in no time. I've decided that it is related in some way to the increased pain meds and increased pain. No doc has ever agreed with that but it is what I have experienced.

    Good luck with your poll,
    Paige

    Matt,
You may not have menopause but now you know what women go through when they have it. Sweat, freeze, sweat, freeze, all night long. No wonder we get cranky!!!

I haven't noticed it with the amount of pain that I have or the amount of pain med. that I take.
Put that on your list and talk to the doc. about it. You probably have a faulty thermostat(in your body).

I only had them for a time when my thyroid sped out of control just before it completely crashed. Once it crashed and then I started meds it stopped.

    Matt,

Be interesting to see how many other men respond. Yeah, I get them occasionally myself. Always thought it was something I ate, or drank too much, or room too warm. Now I wonder....

Come to think of it, I also get something similar during the day. It starts with feeling warm and flushed, then I start feeling hot and sweaty, especially around head and neck. It passes in 5 or 10 minutes. This was very noticeable in the first few weeks after starting Enbrel, happens less now. Told the rheumy's office - nobody seemd to think it was any big deal.

    Hi Matt

I also get night sweats although not as much lately. Only about 3 nights a week. It used to be every night. In fact my standard body temperature is between 99.6 F and 99.8 F. I have always had problems with dehydration as a result. I would suggest that if you have night sweats regularly to make sure you are getting water and juice to replace what you are loosing at night. When your body is dehydrated your immune system is useless.

Wow, being as I AM in menopause, I'm not even sure I should vote in this poll, but I did. I get night sweats every night, all night long. I was dxed with PA a year and a half ago. I also started menopause around the same time. So now the question of the chicken and the egg comes into play. My gyno was surprised I started menopause so young (I was 43). So did the PA have anything to do with that? Would I suffer from night sweats and hot flashes and feverish episodes this early in my life if I didn't have PA? Are the nights sweats, hot flashes, and feverish episodes completely unrelated to my PA? Who knows...my doctors sure don't. I don't either...I just know it's darned annoying! lol

I too get night sweats frequently...I am now done with the 'change' and they should be stopping, I hope...Perhaps it is related to P as well...Could also be related to some of the meds some of us use?

Btw Jody it has taken me about 5 years to get thru the change...I am 47 now so the past 5 years have not been much fun...

And Matt, there is a male menopause according to this, all well as other problems that will cause them..http://sleepdisorders.about.com/cs/s...weatbasics.htm

I didn't vote since I don't really fit into any of the categories.

I no longer have psoriasis and when I did have the symptoms, I didn't have night sweats.

So why am I posting, you ask. Because at the height of my psoriasis, when everything was at its worst (December 2003 - January 2004), I would sweat profusely for no apparent reason. I mean it was strange !!! I'd be just standing around and the sweat would be rolling down my face. I'd look at other people around me and they'd all be fine so it wasn't because the room was hot. And I wasn't wearing clothes that were much different than what most everyone else was wearing. And I wasn't on any medication nor was I getting light treatments. It was all pretty emarrassing at times. And as you can see by the months I indicated, this was during the winter season here in New England. I also found out that my pulse was unusually rapid.

I have long since gotten over all of those symptoms.

I felt that this info might be useful to you and your data gathering.

I never thought the two might be connected but thinking about it, as the PA/P has gotten under better control the night sweats have been getting less frequent.

Good poll FlakeyMatt, I have a Rheumy appointment next week and I'll try to remember to bring it up and see what she says.

ok, Mattster....since you asked so nice....I'll do my best to figure out where I stand in this poll.

Although I don't have night sweats, I have experienced them in the past. I've also had times when I was just standing talking to someone (maybe a little nervous about it....yeah, I am shy!), and sweat will start pouring off of me. Now that I think about it, it was at the height of my worst p flare...hmmm

and just for additional info, when my husband had a hip replacement several years ago, he experienced major episodes of alternating chills and sweats. We attributed it to either pain meds, or the shock his body was experiencing while recovering....so the med or pain theory may apply there, although not associated with p or pa

Keep us posted on how your theory pans out.

wow...do I have hat flashes? All the damn time! Drives me wild! The Dr put me on Zoloft instead of horomones (parents had cancer) for hot flashes...it worked almost immediately! Then the past 6 months when I started taking mtx and all the rest.....well it's not working now.... hot flashes are back 24/7. Anyone else have the same problem?
    Hope your day is Sunny!

Not only do I have the night sweats about 3x/week but the odor of the sweat is WAY beyond my normal sweat stink. My guess is the combo of meds really juice it up. Bextra, Percocet, Neurontin and Skelaxcin.
If you could bottle this stuff I know it would keep werewolfs away, because I have seen any in quite some time.(lol)
Problem is, it also keeps my wife away.

    FYI FlakeyMatt

Saw the rheumy today and I asked about the night sweats. She said it's not unusual for people with inflammatory diseases (ie. Lupus, RA, PA etc) to have them. Most women don't connect it to their disease processes but tend to believe it is hormonal and it's not.

Got a good report as well.

    Hey Becky

Thanks for the info See, I have found many of us have these but it appears that their are doctors out there who do NOT associate the sweats as a manifestatioin of the disease.

I am trying raise awareness to that point Especially, in the case of women who as you pointed out get the "oh its hormonal" answer

    Question

What ever it is that makes us have these "sweats", I wish we could co-ordinate my hots with his colds or vice versa, and maybe we both could get some sleep. We never seem to be hot and cold at the same time. I don't mean sexually either. We got that worked out a long time ago.

    Sweats?

I have had to laugh(and that is good as I have been feelin;g so low) at all the night sweats. Not that it is funny but since I am long past that age (thank goodness) I do know of some ways to help you through this. wear only cotton at night --it obsorbs better--then place a large heavy towel under you and one on top of you then when you wake up and they are wet you can throw them(oh I forgot to tell you to place a big pice of plastic next to you on the floor) on the floor and do not have tochange the bed and blankets. If necessary, repeat the towels and you will find your sleep is not so interrupted. Good luck elaine
